They say teaching is its own reward. While that may be true, on Monday, there are a lot of excuses, parent phone calls, break-ups, make-ups, bad hair days, tears, rallies, study sessions, essays, tardies and dress code violations until Friday. We need something to look forward to in the mean time. That is what Cupcake Wednesdays are for!
How did Cupcake Wednesdays get started? All with a birthday present from my sister. Her then boyfriend, now fiancé, soon to be husband got her Crazy About Cupcakes by Krystina Kastella for Christmas, and had me look through it (mainly to show me the Pina Colada Cupcakes). Not only did I get Pina Colada Cupcakes for my birthday a few months later, but I received that same cookbook with some cupcake goodies to begin my journey through this book.
Between me and my friends at work, there are quite a few birthdays in March. Usually we all pitch in some money and give a gift card. Between all the firings, pink slips and potential salary cuts, we decided to tone down the “hoopla” we normally have for birthdays and decided a card and cupcakes would suffice. Instead of store-bought, I offered to make some out of my new book. And I did. And they were good. That first birthday happened to be on a Wednesday. The second birthday we celebrated happened to be on a Wednesday as well, and I volunteered my blossoming baking skills yet again. They succeeded the first time, the second time shouldn’t be any different, right? Thankfully it wasn’t—cupcakes were a success!
One of us suggested (jokingly I think. I don’t know if anyone thought I would really go for it) that we should have cupcakes EVERY Wednesday until the end of the year. There were really only about 5 more weeks left. I said ok, and thus was born Cupcake Wednesdays!!!
I wasn’t planning on making Cupcake Wednesdays a permanent feature of my life when school started once again. After all, I had football games to watch during the week, and showers galore for my sister on the weekends. But when a $5 bill was slapped down in front of me to buy vanilla and sugar, and then the promise of more money for supplies, I realized how serious my friends/fellow teachers were about this cupcake thing. It’s fun, creative and yummy—how can I say no to that?
